Implementing 3ds max and/or Autodesk VIZ:
A Mentoring Program

Learning the command set in 3ds max or Autodesk VIZ is only a small part of the "know how" needed to complete a project successfully. Choosing the right set of techniques to approach a specific project is not only challenging, but crucial to the success of your project. Varitronics approaches both 3ds max and Autodesk VIZ through a Mentoring Program: you choose the appropriate level of involvement, for both yourself and Varitronics.

Clients working with Varitronics under this Mentoring Program will benefit from the expertise of Gary Dohanish, whose years of experience in the field have given him a unique perspective and understanding of the challenges faced by new – and even experienced – users. Click here to see samples of Gary's work.

Option 1– Project done by Varitronics
  • You have no investment in hardware, software, or training.
  • Together we define the scope of the work – you’ll learn what’s possible and practical.
  • Price can range from $2000 to $20,000; a typical project is $5000, but the actual cost depends on the project variables –the model supplied, the rendering time, the deliverables desired.

Option 2 – Working together on your project

  • We work with you on your project – it becomes a teaching platform.
  • Typically, one person has one week of training while going through the process.
  • Price for a typical project: $5000. Includes consultive training, labor, problem-solving, and final output.

Option 3 – You lead the project –Varitronics supports

  • We are ready to help and consult, at your site or ours, at any point in your project.
  • Fast help is available, by phone and Internet.
  • Rate:$125 per hour for on-site work, or work done at studio.
  • Phone support with minimum 15-minute increments.
  • Note: Pre-paid blocks of phone support available at lower cost.
  • Internet can be used for problem solving; for example, models can be sent for correction.
Whichever option you choose, what you'll get are:
  • Real understanding of how to do your work.
  • Solutions to specific problems encountered.
  • Complete models –all animations, stills, and pan view files supplied on videotape and/or CD.
  • Recommendations for hardware and software solutions which will aid in producing the type of rendering and animations you wish to do.
  • Recommendations for plug-ins to solve specific problems or enhance your project.
  • Help the way you want it and need it.
With each of our options, the advantages are many:
  • Working with an expert who has years of experience.
  • Flexibility – we will supplement your efforts in any way you wish.
  • Security –if you can’t complete the project alone, we’re available to help and will take on completion of the project if you wish.
  • Useful, completed renderings and animations which will win you new projects.
  • Full suite of services from the idea stage to the ready-to-play animation or printed renderings.
  • We have top of the line hardware and software, and can do any technical work that you are not yet able to do.
You can change at any point in your project from one Option to another.

Project Based Training

When you use Autodesk VIZ or 3ds max, you do need to know the commands (basic operation), but basically you are solving a series of mechanical, artistic, and technical problems.

Mechanical –your model should be accurate enough to portray what you are trying to show without becoming too complex for rendering. For example, it is easy to design a model that is far too complex to be practical. Many short cuts can save time and file size but still provide a viable model.

Artistic –the rendering and/or animation should be appealing and/or convincing to the audience. Many techniques have been developed, and choosing which ones to employ to add realism and sparkle depends on the specifics of the project. Many add-ons have become available, developed by people who addressed problems and found solutions.

Technical –the limitations of the hardware and software need to be addressed and overcome creatively through modifications, work-arounds and smart solutions.

Our project-oriented training focuses on applying Autodesk VIZ or 3ds max  to the specific job – the type of work done by the student’s organization. General methodology (the command set) is learned as it is applied to the project. We have found project-oriented training moves you, the user, ahead dramatically, because you are participating actively in the whole process.

Our plan gives you, for one price:

  • A completed job with problems solved and a model developed.
  • Objects, models, and materials created as part of the job, and useful for the next job.
  • A trained user who knows how this job was done and, most importantly, how to do the next.

Working one-on-one with Gary, the user will:

  • Share Gary’s knowledge – the tips and tricks he has learned over many projects.
  • Profit from his knowledge of both hardware and software.
  • See what thought process, methodology, and techniques he uses to solve the problems inherent in the organization’s projects.
  • See what tricks he uses to simplify specific models without sacrificing the final product.
