  George E. Holz
-- Senior Staff Consultant Hardware, Software, and Networking

George Holz has a degree in electrical engineering from MIT, and over 50 granted patents. He has years of experience in electronics and computer technology and has been consulting since 1976 in the design of electronic displays, minicomputer and microcomputer hardware and software, and digital communications.

George’s interest in CAD extends back to his undergraduate years at MIT, where he learned to program on the TX-0, the first core memory transistor computer, and was fascinated with Sketchpad, probably the first CAD drawing program anywhere. At Burroughs Corporation, he used a Computervision minicomputer CAD system to design displays and a Data General minicomputer to test them.

George bought his first personal computer in 1971, a PDP-8. Several years later he was developing a Forth-based interactive drawing editor for a Z80/CPM microcomputer when he discovered the excellent drawing editor by Mike Riddle of Evolution Computing. He purchased source code to this original "AutoCAD" program from the author and followed John Walker’s progress toward a CPM version with great interest. He purchased SN 00001 of the MicroAngelo CPM version of AutoCAD, and with help from John Walker adapted the system to the CDL high-resolution color display. George used AutoCAD extensively during the following years for circuit design and layout and general drawing. His extensive background in microcomputers and display systems is very relevant to the selection and evaluation of display options for CAD workstations.

  Eugene Rutberg, Networking Engineer

Eugene Rutberg’s network setup and troubleshooting capabilities are outstanding and well proven. He focuses on  network installation, configuration, and troubleshooting of both hardware and software. He also has extensive experience with peer to peer networks. As our chief field engineer, he configures individual stations and networks with AutoCAD, and add-on software customized to the client’s needs. Before a system is sold, he evaluates the client’s needs, and tests hardware and software as needed to verify that the system will work as required.

Eugene delivers systems on site, sets them up and integrates them with existing equipment as required. He demonstrates and networks hardware and software operation and gets new users started with their systems, or goes into technical detail with experienced users. After delivery he is available by phone to answer questions. Eugene helps to provide Varitronics Systems’ responsive customer support system by telephone. He discusses the symptoms of a problem to narrow it down from a hardware/software question to a suspected component. He often goes on site to diagnose and solve problems.

  Ron Wescott, Trainer

Ronald Wescott is an engineer whose experience with CAD goes back to 1974. Currently, he is involved in specifying CAD systems, training, and customizing CAD for clients. Ron not only knows how AutoCAD works, but also how to use it in a variety of applications. He has spent thousands of hours using his own workstation to produce drawings for clients. He creates libraries and customizes menus.

Ron has had extensive experience with both microcomputer and minicomputer CAD systems. In 1974, while at Burroughs Corporation, he researched the currently available CAD systems and co-authored the justification proposal for the ComputerVision graphics system. Once it was installed, he managed the system, using it to do his own design work, and helping others to use its capabilities.

Ron’s approach to CAD systems is eminently practical. Because of his engineering background and experience, he has a basic understanding of computer hardware. Having seen and worked with many different CAD configurations, he is in an excellent position to evaluate the type of hardware and software needed for a specific application.

Ron has taught many people, form beginners to advanced users. Advanced training in CAD requires problem solving, and it is here that Ron excels. Each training session is geared to optimize the CAD system to the student’s individual goals. For advanced training, Ron consults with the trainee beforehand, to determine the goals of the training. Before he trains, he works out problems on his own system, so that the training is applicable to the individual’s requirements. Ron has helped apply CAD to a variety of disciplines, working with architects, civil and mechanical engineers, facilities planners, and others, analyzing their engineering and documentation processes, and teaching them how best to apply CAD to their disciplines. He has assisted with data base and storage problems, and helped clients to better configure their CAD systems to their needs.
